Intern Programme

The Murray to the Mountains (M2M) Intern Program has been developed by a partnership of Yarrawonga Health, Numurkah District Health Service, Cobram District Health, Alpine Health and Nathalia District Hospital.  M2M is a sub-regional model for intern placement, based in small rural teaching health services.

 This program provides a unique experience for those junior doctors during their internship year, giving them the total experience in both rural and regional hospitals and medical clinics.  They will have the opportunity to work in rural-based health services and procedural general practice and obtain hands-on experience in working in the rural and regional settings.

Based in some of Victoria’s most beautiful locations such as Yarrawonga, Cobram, Mt Beauty, Falls Creek, Nathalia, Numurkah, Wangaratta and Wodonga, the M2M intern will have all of their career needs met.

Experience being part of a team approach to preventative medicine;

  • Experience all aspects of medicine including leadership roles;
  • Visiting Specialists and local GPs involved in training interns;
  • Be involved with all aspects of patient care;

Some of the aims of the M2M experience for the interns are –

  • Be the patient’s first contact and follow the patient through from initial presentation;
  • Have access to hands-on medicine in a variety of settings – ambulatory, hospital and residential care;
  • Have core rotations of 10 weeks in surgery, medicine and emergency medicine in the Hume region;
  • Have the opportunity to work in rural-based procedural general practice and small rural teaching health services over 20 weeks;
  • Undertake parallel consulting;
  • Be exposed to sports medicine through working in the ski fields or water sports along the Murray River;
  • Manage chronic disease, including geriatric medicine and medication review;
  • Participate in Grand Rounds, clinical review meetings and skills workshops in areas such as ophthalmology, fracture management, ECG interpretation, ENT, Emergency dental workshop;

The M2M Program provides the opportunity for career progression from undergraduate to GP or specialist registrar and a strong foundation for a rural medical career.  At the same time, the value of the M2M experience is readily translated to metropolitan specialist practice.

 Yarrawonga Health is a proud leader in this innovative Program and looks forward to promoting the opportunities and benefits available for Medical Practitioners to work and live in rural and regional areas.
