Medicare Ineligible Patients

Yarrawonga Health is committed to ensuring high quality, patient centered care.

Yarrawonga Health is a public health care facility. All patients who use this facility need to have a Medicare card. Any patients who are Medicare ineligible will need to organise for payment of medical services.

A Medicare ineligible person is any visitor to Australia who does not hold a valid Medicare card, or does not fall under one of the classifications below:

  • Reciprocal rights
  • Asylum seekers and refugees

The Australian Government has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with the governments of the:

  • United Kingdom
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Sweden
  • The Netherlands,
  • Finland
  • Belguim
  • Norway
  • Slovenia
  • Malta*
  • Italy*

*Covered for Medicare for a period of six months from the date of arrival in Australia.

Asylum Seekers and Refugees are provided with free medical care (including diagnostic services) in Victorian hospitals.

Asylum Seekers/Refugees will need to produce appropriate documentation confirming their status from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship or a recognised asylum support agency, such as Red Cross.

If the documentation is not produced you will be expected to pay for all associated medical costs, however the fee will be waived once the documents are presented to Admissions Staff.

A Medicare ineligible patient is required to pay the costs for all medical treatment received at Yarrawonga Health. This includes all Urgent Care Centre visits as well as inpatient care.

If you require access to medical services at Yarrawonga Health, the admissions staff will request from you the following documents:

  • Your passport
  • Visa documentation
  • Contact information both for your stay in Australia and overseas
  • Relevant health insurance policy details

Same Day – Accommodation charge

Overnight (multi day) Accommodation charge per night

  • Single Room $738.00

Maternity Services

  • Birthing Suite (per day) $786.00

Miscellaneous Services

  • Allied Health $101.00 (eg Physio, OT, Dietitian)
  • Electrocardiography ECG $31.25
  • Blood Transfusion $83.35
  • Pre-natal midwife visit $91.00/hour
  • Antenatal Cardiotocography (CTG) $36.65
  • Post-natal midwife visit $91.00/hour

Other Medicare Ineligible Inpatient Charges

Depending on the treatment a patient receives, the following items may be charged in addition to the bed fees –

  • Doctors/Specialist fees - including Consultations, Anaesthetics and Theatre items
  • Pathology, Radiology and other diagnostic items**
  • Prostheses
  • Discharge Medication
  • Transport

**Radiology and Pathology costs will be charged separately and are payable to the external service providers.
