The Alzheimers Australia Project Celebrates Success

The Alzheimers Australia Project Celebrates Success

Thursday, 16 November 2017

“Allawah” – Yarrawonga Health’s Complex Care and Memory Support Unit has been working in partnership with Alzheimers Australia Victoria for the last 6 months to introduce Montessori principles into its model of care culminating in a wonderful celebration on Tuesday at St Cuthberts Church hall and attended by almost 50 people.

The project was  made possible through a generous donation by the Mulwala Water Ski Club. The project involves the introduction and incorporation of the 12 Montessori Principles into Yarrawonga Health’s model of aged care.

The 12 principles focus on what a person living with dementia can do, as opposed to what they cannot and provides opportunities for engagement for the residents, family & staff with the goal of enhancing and improving the quality of life. It focuses on their capabilities, captures their interest and shows them respect.

The approach is flexible, innovative and grounded in research. This ensures every resident’s activities are person centred and a “personal prescription” for their needs, likes and abilities. This model takes people back to a time and place where they had a role and purpose in life. It focuses on creating worthwhile roles, routines and activities for the resident. Its about meaningful & engaging activities - to achieve a sense of fulfilment at the end of each day.

One outcome of project that has been initiated from this is the introduction of visible name badges. The purpose of a visible name badge is to create a culture that supports memory loss while also creating a standard of practice that focuses on addressing social needs by connecting people who provide and receive care.

“I think the staff is amazing with the residents. They are very caring and professional”

“My stepmother is very well cared for and very happy. She considers herself extremely lucky to be in such good hands”.
